Dragons Knights and Legendary sights will come to Houghton next week as Winter Carnival on Michigan Tech’s campus kicks off. The annual tradition celebrating the tenacious husky spirit calls alumni home. Invites families and the community to gaze upon the mighty snow statues and encourages college students to take a break and remember the reason why they chose to go to Michigan Technological University.
We get to see these really cool things being done with all the snow that we get as we trudge through campus. So I think as a community and as a campus, we’re brought together by it and even with our alumni, like all of our alumni come back and they smile and they just remember all the different events and the nostalgia with it. So I think it just brings us together as a campus and brings us together as a community. – Skyler Spitzley, President, Blue Key Honor Society
Excitement for the winter carnival builds alongside the month-long snow statues. From the time students return from winter break they combine their creativity with the engineering skills from class to create incredible and intricate statues from the Copper Country’s most abundant wintery resource. Snow.
And then this year, I think we’re all excited to see what everybody really comes up with. I know I’m excited to see all of the statues and what people come up with for the different dragons and castles. I want to see a moat. If somebody has a moat, I want to see a castle on a moat. But I think also the stage review will have a lot of really cool different things with different medieval ties. I’ve heard the Holy Grail is going to be there. So it’s just, how can students be creative with it and we can still have a broad theme? – Skyler Spitzley, President, Blue Key Honor Society
The first events of the winter carnival include sports games ahead of winter carnival tournaments next week and the royalty coronation on Saturday. The Allnighter next Wednesday will bring the community to campus to see students work furiously on all-night statues and participate in games and activities.
