It’s nearly impossible for communities that embrace the winter to not enjoy ice skating. Throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula and Upper Peninsula, communities are home to indoor and outdoor ice rinks. With Hancock’s takeover of the HoCo Arena, the city introduced more opportunities for open skating indoors. But more recently the city completed work in Laurn Grove Park, so families and friends can enjoy some skating outside.
Laurn Grove is now open for public use. We need to thank Ross and Pete Rulo for getting this moving this year. They did a great job getting the ice in and started. And then Kalen Rulo is going to be working to keep the ice clean and safe for users for the rest of the winter, as long as we can have it open. – Mary Babcock, City Manager, City of Hancock
The HoCo Arena will add new daytime open skating times on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Tuesday and Friday will be reserved for adults. City manager Mary Babcock added that participation in open skating has increased at the facility, and adult skates will test if more events are possible at the location.
