The Copper Country is crisscrossed by an extensive trail system carrying groups of snowmobiles to small towns and hideaways.
This weekend the region will enjoy an influx of additional riders with the state’s free snowmobile weekend kicking off. The annual opportunity allows residents and travelers the ability to get out on the trails without the need for trail permits and registration for their machines.
So far this winter the region has received 119 inches of snow, according to the Keweenaw County Road Commission report.
The Keweenaw Snowmobile Club has trail groomers out. And have completed passes along Trail 3 from Toivola, and Trails 17, 130, 134, and 152. Trail 124 has also been opened. Despite the club making passes over trail 133 KSC does not recommend traveling along the trail due to wet conditions.
Additionally there is not enough snow for travel near High Rock Bay for trails 151 and 136. Trails clubs throughout the Upper Peninsula and the Michigan DNR ask riders to please respect private property. Land use agreements and trail leases allow the network to weave in and out of town and feature locations in the backcountry.
It is necessary for trail clubs, the state department, and the recreation community to respect property owner rights for the sustainability of the trail network.
