For over 30 years the Copper Country Trail National Byway has brought many visitors to experience driving along the 47-mile stretch of road full of historic places and cultural significance. In celebration of the byway’s 30th anniversary, the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region hopes to reinvigorate the community’s involvement in the initiative and revisit potential needs for signage and marketing. The Copper Country Trail National Byway stretches from Houghton to Copper Harbor on US-41 and traces its origins to the routes used in the Keweenaw Peninsula at the peak of the Copper Boom. It first was recognized as a Michigan state heritage road in 1994. And in 2005 it was designated as a part of America’s Byways collection. The trail also features routes sprouting from the main highway to explore other areas of the Keweenaw.
