Even though the first boat won’t leave until May 27th, plenty of visitors are building excitement toward trips to the island.
Isle Royale offers a unique national park experience, often requiring people to stay longer than a day to truly explore even a small portion of the park. Because visitors do tend to stay overnight on the island, most spend an average of 3 to 4 nights in the park, park staff will implement new food storage rules in 2025.
Starting this year Isle Royale national Park will require overnight visitors to store food in animal resistant canisters, often called bear resistant canisters. Additionally, park staff will implement food storage lockers at campgrounds, with installation starting in the summer.
If a food storage locker has not been installed at a campsite, campers are instructed to hang food from a tree. Food stored in the air should be a minimum of 12 feet high and at least 6 feet from the trunk of the tree. Campers should also hang food away from the camp. Park staff suggest keeping food 200 feet from the camp site. Boaters should also keep food stored in the cabin of the vessel or in animal resistant container.
Never leave packs or belongings unattended while in the park.
