An Upper Peninsula corrections officer earns the Michigan State Police Pride of the Eight award for assistance during a roadside struggle. On Monday the Michigan State Police Eighth District, which protects and serves communities of the Upper Peninsula, was awarded to Michigan Department of Corrections officer Jesse Freeman with the Pride of the Eighth award.
On February 15th, MSP Trooper Jenich attempted an arrest a subject for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Alger County. The individual began resisting arrest, and a physical altercation was ensured. The closet backup unit was nearly an hour away when the incident occurred. While driving to work at the Alger Correctional Facility, off-duty MDOC officer Freeman, saw the struggle occur between the trooper and subject. Freeman stopped his vehicle and ran to assist the trooper. Freeman and Trooper Jenich were able to apprehend the subject and place the person in custody.
The pride of the eighth award is given to a first responder who shows exceptional service and a strong commitment to protecting communities in the Upper Peninsula.
