Many Tigers games this spring will be played with backup from a computerized umpire. The Automated Ball-Strike System, or ABS, will be tracking pitches. Real umpires will still be behind the plate making the calls pitch-by-pitch. Each team will begin the game with two challenges, that can be initiated only by the pitcher, catcher or batter. At that point, the ABS will be checked. If the team making the challenge is correct, they can use that challenge again. If the umpire was correct, they lose the challenge. The system will not be used for regular games this summer. Depending on how it works, it could be ready for next summer.
