Many local non-profits and organizations lost a beloved volunteer to the Copper Country on Saturday. David Crowley of Laurium, born September 8th, 1951, passed away after a battle with cancer over the weekend. Crowley graduated from Calumet High School and served his country as a commander in the 107th Engineer Battalion. Many remember Crowley through his work throughout the community working as a volunteer with veterans’ causes and with the Calumet JROTC.
David was a member of the Calumet North Star Battalion in high school. And a stunt supporter for over forty years. – Major Michael Fraley, CLK JROTC program
Crowley enjoyed working with the young and old. He was a regular volunteer for Little Brother Friends of the Elderly. Executive Director Carol Korpala shared that LBFE will remain grateful for his leadership at the Sacred Heart holiday meal site, where David shared his love for cooking and music. Crowley also worked with young talent on stage as the director for the Houghton High School drama club, often stopping by the Houghton radio stations with students to promote shows.
He; ‘s made a difference in countless students’ lives. It was more than theater. He gave kids confidence and got them to do things they thought they couldn’t. He will be sorely missed. Whenever we needed anything he was willing to help. – Anders Hill, Superintendent, Houghton Portage Township Schools
While David Crowley could be found around the Keweenaw peninsula assisting many organizations, he was very proud to organize the Bridgefest parade for many years as the Parade Coordinator. The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce expressed their gratitude for the role Crowley played each year to kick off summer in the Copper Country. Those interested in learning more about David Crowley or wishing to share stories of his impression on the community can find his obituary here. A visitation service this evening will begin at 3 pm at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home. A prayer service will follow visitation at 7 pm.
Little Brother’s Friends of the Elderly message about David Crowley:
Dave was a long-time friend and supporter of Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly and he will be missed. We are grateful for his leadership at our Sacred Heart holiday meal site where he shared his joy of cooking. He joined the Board of Directors in March of last year to contribute to the overall well-being of the organization.
With his passing, he lives on in our hearts through his stories and poems. Here’s an excerpt from his poem, “The Day Begins”:
Into the fray,
the crowded hallways,
searching for familiar faces,
saddened when they’re gone from where
you saw them yesterday.
Bridgefest Committee and Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce message about David Crowley:
Bridgefest’s beloved Parade Coordinator, David Crowley. A dedicated volunteer and tireless supporter of our community, David’s kindness, passion, and unwavering commitment touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. For years, he selflessly gave his time to countless organizations, always ready to lend a hand to those in need. His contributions were immeasurable, and his presence was a source of inspiration to many.
David’s love for Bridgefest and his role as Parade Coordinator were truly a reflection of his character—a person who was always there for others, working behind the scenes with a smile and a heart full of generosity. His absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who were fortunate enough to work alongside him.
As we gather for Bridgefest in 2025, we will honor David’s legacy with a Grand Parade held in his memory. It will serve as a reminder of the profound impact he made on our community and the love he had for the Bridgefest parade. David was always eager to pack the parade with bands, welcome anyone and anything to participate, and make sure every corner of the event was filled with energy and excitement. His humor and wit were unmatched, and he would love nothing more than to give the City’s DPW and Police departments a hard time with his “OG” knowledge and quick banter.
The cheers at the start of each year’s parade, the laughter, the camaraderie—those were all part of the magic he created. David’s spirit and joy for the parade were felt by everyone around him. We know he will be with us in spirit as we continue the celebration, he helped make so special, and as we carry forward his legacy with each step of the parade route. He will be missed dearly, but never forgotten.
David Crowley, you will be missed more than words can express. May you rest in peace, and may your memory continue to inspire us all.
