Two Nigerian men have been sentenced in federal court related to the death of a Marquette teen in 2022. Sameul and Sampson Ogoshi of Lagos Nigeria, were sentenced today in Marquette at the Federal District Court of West Michigan. Both men will spend 210 months in jail for the sexual extortion of Jordan DeMay and other victims.
Today sends a thundering message to every criminal or would-be criminal who operates these schemes. You are not immune from justice. We will track you down and we will hold you accountable, even if we have to go halfway around the world to do so. The day when you could commit these crimes outside our borders, rake in easy cash, destroy lives, and escape justice is over. Today is a critical reminder for all of us who carry phones or hand them to our kids that these devices can be dangerous. Determination of financial restitution to cover the cost of funeral expenses was postponed for 30 days to clarify the amount donated by the community to the DeMay family. The Ogoshi brothers are the first Nigerians extradited to the United States on criminal charges. The FBI during its international investigation positively identified more than one hundred victims extorted by the Ogoshi brothers and others involved in the scheme.
The government awaits the extradition of a third man from Nigeria before moving forward in that case. Totten shared that the government anticipates that individuals appeals in Nigerian lower courts will finish in the near future. Adding he anticipates a successful extradition to the United states for that individual. In a separate, but related case, the government charged five Americans with money laundering, who allegedly acted as a middleman to send money to Nigeria.
Totten also shared that the rise of sextortion should make all Americans wary of strangers online. Going on to state the government has identified a similar case, that will be tried in the western district of Michigan related to the death of a Kent County teen.
